Wuhu Vocational Technical University is one of the first nationally recognized model higher vocational colleges and the first in Anhui Province. It was selected for the Plan for the Development of High-Level Vocational Colleges and Majors with Chinese Characteristics and is the only high-level school construction unit in Anhui Province. It has also been selected as a local high-level technical university and a "dual-featured" school in Anhui Province. Founded in 1983, the school was originally named Wuhu Union University. It was renamed in 1997. In 2000, the century-old Wuhu Agricultural School was incorporated. In 2012, it merged with Wuhu Information Technology Vocational College. In 2022, Wuhu Normal School and the affiliated secondary vocational school of Wuhu Vocational and Technical College were integrated and merged. In 2023, with the approval of the provincial government and the filing of the Ministry of Education, the undergraduate-level Wuhu Vocational and Technical University, based on Wuhu Vocational and Technical College, was established. The university is a social evaluation organization for Wuhu City's vocational skill level certification and one of the first national demonstration vocational skill appraisal institutes in China.
